Econowind featured in IMO video on low carbon shipping
4 April 2025 | News | by Econowind
Did you already check out the new video of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)?
It spotlights innovative solutions for reducing emissions across the global shipping industry. Econowind is mentioned as one of the key solutions for greenhouse gas reduction.
The IMO is driving a global effort to decarbonize shipping. With the adoption of the 2023 IMO Strategy on the Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships, the organization has set clear targets: to reach net-zero emissions from international shipping by or around 2050, with checkpoints in 2030 and 2040. Achieving this will require a broad mix of technologies, from alternative fuels to energy-saving devices.
Wind propulsion as a key enabler
In the video, the IMO highlights wind propulsion as one of the key enablers of sustainable shipping. Econowind’s VentoFoil technology features as a concrete example of this potential. Our suction-based wing sails reduce fuel consumption and emissions by harvesting wind power to assist vessel propulsion. Simple to install and operate, the system offers real impact today.
Econowind’s inclusion in the IMO video confirms what we see every day: wind propulsion is no longer a concept of the future, but a working solution already contributing to greener operations on a growing number of vessels. With over 100 VentoFoil units sold across the globe, we are contributing to making shipping more sustainable.
Recognized by regulators, embraced by shipping
The IMO’s acknowledgment of wind propulsion reflects a growing industry shift. Regulatory bodies are now explicitly recognizing the value of wind-assisted ship propulsion as part of the solution mix. At the same time, forward-thinking shipowners are embracing wind to meet decarbonization targets while improving operational efficiency.
From general cargo ships to tankers and Ro-Ros, Econowind’s VentoFoils are proving their value across a wide range of vessels and routes. With measurable fuel savings and performance improvements from the first voyage, wind is becoming a practical and proven tool for compliance and competitiveness.
A shared mission
Being featured by the IMO is an honor, and a responsibility. At Econowind, we’re proud to contribute to the global push for low-carbon shipping. We believe in a pragmatic approach: implementing solutions that work now, and work with any type of fuel.
We thank the IMO for highlighting our work and remain committed to making wind assisted ship propulsion an accessible and impactful option for the entire shipping industry.
