(NYK)
The first wind-assisted powered
vessel in a diverse fleet
NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) is a Japanese shipping and logistics company founded in 1885, boasting a diverse global fleet and a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.
In July 2024, Econowind installed two 16-meter VentoFoil units on the bulk carrier NBA Magritte, which is under a long-term charter contract with Cargill. This marks the first time Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion units have been installed on an NYK Group vessel.
Choosing
Econowind
The initiative of NYK stems from their target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Sustainability is top-of-mind within the organization, as well as within the industry.
“As part of our ‘Sail GREEN’ brand, we emphasize NYK’s efforts to reduce CO2-emissions through the transportation of goods. In addition, we hope to contribute to our customers’ eco-friendly supply chains, regardless of the mode of transport. The VentoFoil units from Econowind help us to strengthen our brand and fulfil our efforts.”

Client quote
“We are proud of the successful installation of the VentoFoil units on board our vessel NBA Magritte, through good and deep communication with Econowind and Cargill, from the very beginning of this project. We are now looking forward to verifying the effectiveness of the VentoFoil units with continuous support from Econowind and Cargill.”
Installation
process
To ensure a smooth installation, two main steps were taken. This includes the pre-installation phase and installation completion.
The pre-installation started during the dry dock work in September 2023. NYK carried out the installation of the foundation and cabling works, as well as setting up the Vessel Performance Monitoring System. After the VentoFoils were manufactured at the Econowind factory in the Netherlands, the second step began. The Econowind team completed the installation in July 2024, in the port of Rotterdam.
Prior to the installation, NYK held several meetings with Econowind and other relevant parties, including ship owners, ship managers and ship charterers, to discuss the feasibility, fitting locations, and operational matters related to the installation. Throughout this process, Econowind consistently provided excellent solutions and demonstrated strong coöperation. NYK greatly appreciated Econowind’s support.
Benefits and
results
Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion enables NYK to use the knowledge that they gained through research and development to promote initiatives related to various energy-saving technologies, including wind power.
“With the new VentoFoil units on board the NBA Magritte, we will collect data on the propulsion generated by this equipment and measure its effectiveness, together with Cargill and NYK R&D. We are curious and eager to learn about the insights that the VentoFoil units will provide us.”
