Onego Shipping & Chartering embraces wind propulsion

12 May 2025 | News | by Econowind

A major milestone in sustainable shipping

In the beginning of May 2025, Onego announced a significant step forward in sustainability.

The first vessel, MV Onego Deusto’ has been equipped with VentoFoil wind propulsion units, which were successfully installed. This project marks a new chapter in the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Paving the way for sustainable shipping
The installation of the VentoFoil units on the geared flagship vessel represents a strategic move to harness wind power, aiming to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The project was the result of years of close collaboration an dedicated efforts between Onego and Econowind. It exemplifies a strong partnership, focused on innovation and sustainability.

Marcel van Eijsden, CEO of Onego, is excited for the future: “The primary objectives of this initiatives are to maintain vessel speed while reducing the main engine power, with a targeted 10% reduction in carbon emissions. This pioneering effort is the first instance of wind propulsion systems being installed on Onego vessels, paving the way for more environmentally friendly maritime operations.”

A sustainable future
The installation process took approximately four days. It was concluded in Rotterdam at the beginning of May, after a lengthy period of useful discussions, production, and meticulous preparations. This achievement underscores our dedication to advancing sustainable shipping practices and sets a promising precedent for the industry’s future. We show that our VentoFoil units are suitable for any vessel: geared/gearless, bulk or RoRo carriers, etc.

Frank Nieuwenhuis, CEO of Econowind, looks back on the collaboration: “Together, Onego and Econowind are making a meaningful difference in decarbonizing maritime transportation, reaffirming their commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.”

Now that the installation process has been completed, sea trials are starting soon. The team of Econowind is curious and hopeful about the results and will closely follow this next phase.
