Boomsma Shipping
Specialized in maritime transport
and logistics services
Boomsma Shipping is a family-run maritime company providing a wide range of shipping services, with a strong commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction.
Next to providing comprehensive ship management services, the company is also committed to sustainability and implements eco-friendly practices in its operations to minimize environmental impact. Their vessel, Frisian Sea, has recently been equipped with two VentoFoil units.
Choosing
Econowind
The requirements as stated by Boomsma for MV Frisian Sea were a perfect fit for the Econowind Flatrack system.
No interference with cargo operations, removable/replaceable, and easy to use. Those were the requirements from Boomsma Shipping while choosing Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion. Due to climate and regulatory challenges, the company was looking for a way to optimize their fleet with regards to sustainable shipping. After building and trimming the vessels to reduce fuel usage, this was the next logical step for them.

Client quote
“We believe it’s necessary and very important to meet sustainability challenges to reduce our environmental footprint. Together with the IMO decarbonization goals for 2050, we want to do our part to reduce our fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as soon as possible.”
Installation
process
Boomsma Shipping looks back at an efficient installation process, even during the COVID-19 period.
The installation of the Flatrack solution was relatively easy. It came with its complications, due to lockdowns and COVID-19 consequences. The preparations for the installation required cable routing, hatch covers to be enforced and class approval. After that, the installation went fast, bearing in mind the circumstances.
Benefits and
results
By installing the Flatrack VentoFoil solution, Boomsma Shipping demonstrates a dedication to sustainability and a future-proof approach within the maritime industry.
Johan Boomsma is positive: “With the help of Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion, part of the EU Interreg North Sea region program, we will now test the performance during the coming two years. This innovative technology has to work in our daily operations with various wind conditions. We hope to find savings to be around 10%.”
